To cut more difficult shapes you can use any power saw.
After reading many comments on this subject i will use green board instead of backerboard or hardyboard to replace damaged old backsplash drywall.
You can make it look expressive with a new color.
My contractor has told me that there is no need to put backer board on the wall for a tile backsplash in the kitchen.
I used hardie backer board that i purchased at home depot to fit the backsplash area and then screwed it to the wall.
I put the board up in 3 sections so it s easier to remove.
Please keep in mind that power saws make a lot of dust and proper respiratory care must be taken such as a wearing the proper mask and cutting outdoors.
